Explorer Flight Missions: The Great Lakes - Hidden Gems
This month we are going to The Great Lakes region for an awesome adventure!
The Great Lakes region refers to the area surrounding the five Great Lakes in North America — Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario — and the land and communities connected to them. It’s a massive geographic, economic, and cultural region that spans parts of the United States and Canada.
Discover the hidden gems of the Great Lakes from the cockpit of your airplane! This five-leg scenic adventure takes you on a breathtaking loop through some of the region’s most stunning and lesser-known airports. Starting at Mackinac Island (KMCD), you’ll hop to Charlevoix (KCVX) before cutting across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to Sawyer International (KSAW). From there, follow Lake Superior’s rugged shoreline into Thunder Bay, Ontario (CYQT), then make a short wilderness hop to International Falls (KINL). The journey wraps up with a spectacular approach into Houghton County (KCMX) on the Keweenaw Peninsula. Each flight offers a unique mix of coastal views, inland forests, and untouched wilderness - a perfect adventure for pilots seeking both challenge and beauty.
