Explorer Flight Missions: The World’s Oldest Airports

This month’s theme is The World’s Oldest Airports. In this iteration we are going to cover airports in the United States, Italy, France, Germany, and Netherlands.

You can fly these on your own or get a group going - it’s up to you. Make sure you choose an appropriate aircraft and conduct proper flight planning. Let the adventure begin!

1. KALB: Albany International Airport, United States.

Albany International Airport, established in 1928, is the oldest municipal airport in the U.S. It is located 11km northwest of Albany, New York.

 
 

 

2. LIRA: Roma / Ciampino Airport, Italy.

Rome Ciampino Airport is located 12km off the city center of Rome. Opened in 1916, LIRA is one of the oldest airports in the world and was Rome’s only airport until the opening of Leonardo da Vinci airport in 1961.

 
 

 

3. EDDW: Bremen Airport, Germany.

Bremen Airport, also known as City Airport Bremen, is located 3.5km away from the city of Bremen in Northern Germany. Established in 1913, it is one of the oldest airports in the world. The airport handled 2.6 million passengers in 2013.

 
 

 

4. EHAM: Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Netherlands.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is located in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, about 9.1km southwest of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The airport was established as a military airbase in 1916.

 
 

 

5. LFPB: Paris-Le Bourget Airport, France.

The Paris-Le Bourget Airport began commercial operations in 1919 and is touted as the oldest airport in France. The airport is located in the commune of Le Bourget, about 7km north of Paris.
